HoldMyBeer
„Hold my beer” is a colloquial expression used humorously to announce that someone is about to do something daring, foolish, or impressive - usually with the attitude: „Watch me, I can do it better (or crazier).“
The social media app HoldMyBeer is all about the sport of parkour. Users upload videos of themselves completing parkour challenges and add metadata such as time and location. Other users can watch these challenges, accept them, and upload their own attempts. The app features 2D scrolling navigation: vertical scrolling takes you to the next challenge (similar to TikTok), while horizontal scrolling lets you view other users’ attempts.

Implementation
AppJoy was responsible for the entire technical implementation of the app - from setting up the server infrastructure to developing the app frontends. The development began with a feasibility study, during which a prototype without a backend was created to test whether playing such a large number of videos (in a 2D matrix) on a mobile device with limited resources was feasible. Through optimized preloading and early unloading of videos, a smooth and fluid user experience was achieved.
Next, an MVP was developed that included the app’s core features: users could sign up, create challenges, discover and watch challenges from other users, like them, and upload their own attempts.
The MVP was then expanded with additional features such as a cluster map displaying challenges on a map, a username search function, advertisements via Google AdMob, and a daily streak feature to increase user retention.
